ACA open enrollment in South Carolina: dates, subsidies, and how to pick
Open enrollment is the main window to start or change an ACA marketplace plan. Here is how subsidies work and what “Bronze vs Silver” actually means.
The ACA marketplace (Healthcare.gov in South Carolina) opens every fall for coverage that starts January 1. That window is when most people can enroll or change plans without a qualifying life event.
If you miss it, you generally wait until next year unless you lose other coverage, move, get married, have a baby, or hit another qualifying event. Do not assume you can “just sign up in March.”
Subsidies are the real price
The sticker premium is not what most households pay. Premium tax credits are based on household income and size. A plan that looks expensive on the card can be the cheaper option after the credit, especially Silver plans that also unlock cost-sharing reductions if you qualify.
When we quote, we estimate the credit first, then compare net monthly cost plus deductible — not the carrier’s list price.
Metal levels, without the jargon
- Bronze: lower premium, higher deductible. Fine if you rarely use care and can cash-flow a surprise bill.
- Silver: the pivot. Often the best net deal once subsidies and cost-sharing reductions apply.
- Gold: higher premium, lower deductible. Makes sense if you know you will use care.
Networks still matter more than the metal. A Gold plan that drops your pediatrician is the wrong Gold plan.
What to bring
Household size, last year’s income (or a good estimate for this year), ZIP code, doctors you want to keep, and any prescriptions you fill monthly. That is enough for us to compare the South Carolina exchange and the off-exchange options that sometimes fit better.

ICHRA vs group health: which one actually fits a small team?
An ICHRA lets you set a tax-free allowance and send employees to individual plans. A group plan is one contract for everyone. The math is not the same for an 8-person shop and a 40-person shop.
