How to Check If Your Doctor and Prescriptions Are Covered Before You Enroll

In South Carolina, almost every 2027 Marketplace plan is an HMO, so checking your doctors and drugs before you enroll matters more than the premium.

To check if your doctor is in network, search the carrier's provider directory using the exact plan name you're considering, then call the doctor's office and ask if they'll accept that plan in 2027. For prescriptions, look up each drug in that plan's 2027 formulary and note the tier and any prior authorization or quantity limits. Do both before you enroll, because a network or formulary that doesn't fit can cost you more than a higher premium.

Why this matters more in South Carolina

On the South Carolina Marketplace, BlueCross BlueShield of SC's BlueEssentials and BlueConnect plans are the only EPOs. Every other plan is an HMO, and there are no PPOs. Neither plan type generally pays for non-emergency care outside its network.

The network also depends on the specific plan. BlueCross offers its statewide EPO alongside regional HMOs like Blue Congaree, Blue Cooper and Blue Reedy, and each one has a different hospital list. Here in the Midlands, our network data shows Prisma Health Richland and Prisma Health Baptist in Columbia are in-network on the BlueCross statewide EPO and Ambetter, but not on the Blue Congaree HMO. That's true even though Blue Congaree Silver 1 is Richland County's 2027 benchmark plan.

Step 1: Make your list

Write down:

  • Every doctor you want to keep, with their practice name and office address (the same doctor can be in-network at one location and not another)
  • The hospital you'd want to use, plus any specialists, therapists or labs you see often
  • Every prescription, with the exact name and dose

Step 2: Search the directory by plan name

When you compare plans on HealthCare.gov or through our self-enroll link, each plan links to its provider directory. You can also go to the carrier's website. Search under the network name for your plan (for example, "Blue Congaree" or "Ambetter Premier"), not just the carrier. HealthCare.gov also suggests calling the insurer at the number on its website, or calling the Marketplace at 1-800-318-2596 for help.

Step 3: Call the doctor's office

Directories can be out of date. Call the billing office and ask:

  1. "Do you accept [exact plan name] for 2027?"
  2. "Is Dr. [name] taking new patients on that plan?"
  3. "Which hospital does Dr. [name] admit to?"

If they're unsure, ask them to confirm with the carrier's provider services line.

Step 4: Check every prescription on the formulary

Look each drug up in the plan's 2027 drug list and write down:

  • Tier: Generic, preferred brand, non-preferred or specialty. Your copay depends on it.
  • PA: Prior authorization means your doctor has to get approval first.
  • QL: A quantity limit caps how much you can fill at a time.
  • Not on formulary: The plan generally won't cover it without an exception.

Our 2027 formulary review found these differences on drugs we're often asked about:

Step 5: Check your hospital, not just your doctor

A doctor can be in-network while the hospital they use isn't. A few 2027 examples from our network data:

  • Lexington Medical CenterNot in network: In-network on (2027).
  • Prisma Health Richland (Columbia)Not in network: In-network on (2027).
  • MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center DowntownNot in network: In-network on (2027).

  • Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center (Charlotte)With restrictions: In-network on (2027).
  • Novant Health Presbyterian (Charlotte)Not in network: In-network on (2027).

Step 6: Save proof

Screenshot the directory and formulary pages with the date showing, and note who you spoke with.

Neither generally covers non-emergency care outside its network. In SC, the BlueCross BlueShield of SC BlueEssentials and BlueConnect plans are the only EPOs, and every other plan is an HMO. Our HMO vs EPO guide explains more.

PA is prior authorization: the plan has to approve the drug before it pays. QL is a quantity limit on how much you can fill at once.

No. Neither is on any carrier's 2027 SC Marketplace formulary.
