Berkeley County has three Marketplace carriers for 2027: Ambetter from Absolute Total Care, BlueCross BlueShield of SC and First Choice Next, with 48 plans. The benchmark silver plan for a 40-year-old costs $694 a month at full price before subsidies, up from $556 in 2026 (+24.8%). Molina has left the county, and no new carrier has entered.
That 24.8% jump matches the statewide enrollment-weighted average, but the reason is local. The 2026 benchmark was a Molina plan, and with Molina gone the benchmark moved to a pricier First Choice Next plan.

First Choice Next has the lowest bronze, silver and gold prices in the county. BCBS is the highest at silver and gold, and the gap is wide: its lowest gold is $175 a month more than First Choice Next's for a 40-year-old.
What changed for 2027: exits and entries
Molina is leaving. Molina had 12 plans in Berkeley County in 2026, and in 2026 its Molina Silver Standard plan was the benchmark. It has no 2027 plans. Former Molina members should choose a new plan by December 15 instead of waiting for HealthCare.gov to match them to one. Our guide on Molina's exit explains how.
No new carriers. First Choice Next was already here in 2026 with 8 plans and still has 8. Oscar is entering neighboring Charleston County, but not Berkeley.
Plan menus changed. Ambetter went from 9 plans to 17. BCBS went from 31 to 23, keeping both the statewide BlueEssentials and BlueConnect EPO plans and its regional Blue Cooper HMO.
The cheapest plans changed hands. In 2026, BCBS Blue Cooper Bronze 2 was the cheapest bronze at $427 and Molina had the cheapest gold. In 2027, First Choice Next has both.
Local hospitals and which plans include them
Berkeley County has one hospital in our network data, Roper St. Francis Berkeley, so most residents also count on hospitals in North Charleston, Charleston and Summerville.

- First Choice Next includes all five hospitals on this list and has the cheapest premiums. That is why we expect many Berkeley County families to look hard at it this year. Read our First Choice Next 2027 review.
- Roper St. Francis Berkeley and Roper Hospital are in the BCBS EPO and First Choice Next only. Ambetter and the Blue Cooper HMO do not include them. See Roper St. Francis and Bon Secours networks.
- The Blue Cooper HMO includes MUSC but none of the Roper, Trident or Summerville hospitals in our data. If you pick BCBS for those hospitals, you need the EPO.
- Summerville Medical Center is in the BCBS EPO with restrictions, so confirm your specific doctor or service before you enroll.
Which plan type fits whom
Every Berkeley County plan is an HMO except the BCBS BlueEssentials and BlueConnect EPOs, and the SC Marketplace has no PPOs. Neither type pays out of network except emergencies. Our HMO vs. EPO guide explains the difference.
You want the lowest premium and rarely need care. First Choice Next Bronze Essential is $509 at age 40. Its $12,000 deductible equals its out-of-pocket maximum, so it pays for little beyond preventive care until you hit that number.
You use the doctor often or have a planned surgery. First Choice Next Gold Enhanced is $672 at age 40, $22 a month less than the benchmark silver plan, with a $1,000 deductible, $35 primary care and $80 specialist visits. With a tax credit, it still costs less than the benchmark after the credit. Our bronze vs. silver vs. gold guide shows the math.
You are tied to MUSC specialists. Every network here includes MUSC University Medical Center, so you can shop on price.
Your income is lower. Silver plans with cost-sharing reductions can beat gold on deductible. See cost-sharing reductions.
You work on base or for a large employer. Check job-based options and TRICARE eligibility first; our agents can help you compare.
